Happy Birthday WWW!

Happy Birthday WWW!: "

Twenty years ago today, the World Wide Web, also known as “the web”, was born at CERN, The European Organization for Nuclear Research. This event should not be confused with the Internet’s birth. According to the World Wide Web Consortium’s website, the World Wide Web is “an internet-based hypermedia initiative for global information sharing”. Tim Berners-Lee is credited with the invention of the web, along with scientist Robert Cailliau.

Berners-Lee envisioned the concept of using hypertext to help researchers share information over the internet. According to Wikipedia, he proposed “ to build a hypertext project” called “WorldWideWeb” (one word, also “W3″) as a ‘web’ of ‘hypertext documents’ to be viewed by browsers, using a client–server architecture.” Berners-Lee used a computer called NeXT as the world’s first web server. On August 6, 1991, “the web” made its public debut.

Today, the World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C, as it is often called, sets the standards for “web” development. Tim Berners-Lee is still very active in the development of “the web” and is the Director of W3C. He was Knighted in 2004 by Queen Elizabeth. He also directs the Web Science Trust and The World Wide Web Foundation.

“The web” has transformed into a medium for the endless sharing of ideas, entertainment, and commerce. Could the men who set this idea in motion ever have envisioned the powerful influence it has become today? So today, when you check up on friends half-way around the globe on Facebook, or catch the latest gossip on some news website, take a moment to wish “the web” a very happy twentieth birthday!

Nokia to Unveil Windows Phone 7 Devices on August 17?

Nokia to Unveil Windows Phone 7 Devices on August 17?: "

After ditching Symbian and MeeGo to go with Windows Phone 7, Nokia has been working with Microsoft for months now. With Nokia’s support and low cost production expertise, Microsoft has a chance to go mass market with Windows Phone 7. It might even have a shot at dethroning Android as the king of smartphones in a few years.

The Nokia Sea Ray, presumably Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 device was leaked about a month ago. It is identical to the Nokia N9, which received a lot of positive feedback.

Today, Unwired reported that Microsoft and Nokia are holding a joint event at this month’s GamesCom in Cologne, Germany. Since it’s a joint event, held by Nokia and Microsoft’s Windows Phone division, it doesn’t take Sherlock to deduce that we might see an official unveiling of the first Windows Phone 7 device by Nokia.

Android has been gaining market share at the expense of Symbian. It controls close to 50% of the worldwide smartphone market now. Nokia’s smartphone market share has been declining rapidly, thanks to the Android invasion and the tremendous growth of iOS. The move to Windows Phone 7 is regarded as its ‘Hail Mary’ move by many analysts. It will decide the future of Nokia in the coming months.

Here’s the invite to the event:

“World’s Largest” Stop Motion Animation Created Using Nokia N8

“World’s Largest” Stop Motion Animation Created Using Nokia N8: "

What else could be a phone used for? A record breaking result? Well, it has already. Using a Nokia N8, Sumo Science and Aardman hold a Guinness Record for creating the largest stop-motion set stretching over 11,000 square feet of Welsh sand.

Stop motion is an animation technique or a cinematic process that is used to makes static objects appear as if they were moving. The technique is generally used in clay-animation. It works by moving objects slightly and shooting it in different frames. When you playback the frames, the illusion of fluid motion is created and the objects appear to move by themselves.

The short film titled, Gulp, tells a simple story of a fisherman going about his daily catches and gets swallowed by a larger predator. Shot on location at Pendine Beach in South Wales, every frame of this stop-motion animation was shot using a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. The film has broken a world record for the “largest stop-motion animation set”, with the largest scene stretching over 11,000 square feet.

Gulp - World's Largest Stop Motion Animation

Co-director Will Studd said: “The film was a huge test of planning and coordination with mother nature. We were incredibly lucky with conditions and tide times – sometimes we got our final frame for the day just as the waves crashed in around our set.”

Watch the short film here:

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how it was made:

Earlier in August 2010, Nokia hired Aardman to create the world’s smallest stop-frame animation. The film was shot using a Nokia N8 with a macro lens.
